How to Choose Hair Extensions: Texture, Collection & Color

Your hair extension hookup.

Texture. Collection. Color. Here’s how to choose.

The short answer: to choose hair extensions, decide three things in order: the texture that matches your natural hair, the collection that fits the hair quality you want, and the color (often a blend of shades) that matches your lengths. If any of those feel unclear, our free 1:1 consultation is there to help you narrow it down.

Free texture, collection and color guidance. Reach us through our contact page. This isn’t a styling or installation appointment.

Two questions, one conversation: texture and collection first, then color.
  • Step 1Match your texture
  • Step 2Choose your collection
  • Step 3Find your color

Step 1: Match your texture

Texture matching is the first thing to get right. Extensions blend best when they look like your hair on an ordinary day, not right after a blowout. Look at your hair air-dried, then choose the closest family:

Straight

Smooth from root to end with little or no bend. Best if you wear your hair sleek, or flat-iron it most days.

Wavy

A loose S-shape or a bend through the mid-lengths. Best if your hair dries with movement but not defined curls.

Curly

Defined curls or coils that spring back. Best if you wear your natural curl pattern most of the time.

Between two textures? Choose the one you wear most often. If you heat-style every day, a straighter texture may be easier to blend. If you embrace your natural pattern, match it as closely as you can.

Step 2: Choose your Bohyme collection

As an authorized online Bohyme distributor, we carry several Bohyme collections. The main difference between them is the hair itself:

Collection Hair Worth knowing
Ethos 100% Remi® Virgin Human Hair Virgin Remi® hair
Luxe 100% Remi® Virgin Human Hair Virgin Remi® hair
Private Reserve Virgin Remi® Human Hair Virgin Remi® hair
Classic Remi® Human Hair Remi® hair, not labeled virgin

What do the terms mean? Remi® refers to human hair whose cuticles are kept intact and aligned in one direction, root to tip. Virgin refers to hair that hasn’t been chemically processed before it’s made into extensions.

Bohyme Ethos vs. Classic: Ethos is 100% Remi® Virgin Human Hair, and Classic is Remi® Human Hair. If virgin hair matters to you, look at Ethos, Luxe or Private Reserve. If you’d like to see how Classic compares, ask us and we’ll walk you through it.

Collection isn’t the same as method

The collection tells you about the hair. The method tells you how it’s attached. These are two separate choices:

  • Hand-tied wefts are thin, flat and flexible, and are installed by a trained professional stylist.
  • Machine-tied wefts are sturdier, and many stylists cut them to fit.

Not sure which method you need? Ask your stylist first. If you’re still deciding, read how to prepare for your best install.

Step 3: Find your color

Hair extension color matching is where most second-guessing happens. A few habits make it easier:

  • Match your lengths, not your roots. Extensions sit under and blend into your mid-lengths and ends.
  • Check in natural daylight. Indoor lighting and phone filters shift tone.
  • Think in blends. Dimensional hair often matches best with a blended or rooted shade, or with two shades used together.
  • Use a color ring if you have one. Hold it against a clean, dry section near the back of your head.
Matching color from photos and descriptions online is never guaranteed. Screens vary. If you’re unsure, tell us about your hair and we’ll help you compare shades before you buy.

When a free consultation helps

You don’t need a consultation to shop, but it’s a good idea if:

  • you’re between two textures, or your hair has more than one pattern
  • you’re comparing Ethos, Luxe, Private Reserve and Classic
  • your color is highlighted, balayaged, rooted or very dimensional
  • you’re a stylist ordering for a client and want a second opinion

FAQ

How do I choose hair extensions?

Start with texture (straight, wavy or curly) to match your natural hair. Then choose a collection based on the hair you want, and match color to your mid-lengths and ends in daylight.

What’s the difference between Bohyme Ethos and Classic?

Ethos is 100% Remi® Virgin Human Hair. Classic is Remi® Human Hair. Luxe (100% Remi® Virgin Human Hair) and Private Reserve (Virgin Remi® Human Hair) are also virgin Remi® options.

Hand-tied vs. machine-tied: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. Hand-tied wefts are thin and flat and are installed by a professional stylist. Machine-tied wefts are sturdier and can often be cut to fit. Your stylist can tell you which suits your hair and install.

How do I match my hair extension color online?

Compare shades against your lengths in natural light, consider a blended or rooted shade if your color is dimensional, and use a color ring if you have one. If you’re still unsure, request a free consultation.

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. It’s free guidance on texture, collection and color, requested through our contact page. It isn’t a paid styling or in-person installation appointment.
